What's in a name?

As I was first starting my photography business, choosing a name was the hardest part for me. I was comparing myself to all the other photographers in my area (BIG MISTAKE, never compare yourself to others). Then finally, I asked myself “Do I really want to be like everyone else, or stand out a little?” A lot of photographers use their names as their business name, but my name does not have a good jingle to it, especially after adding photography after it… Bre Twamley Photography… meh…

I get asked a lot why did I name my business Lemon Water Photography. Well, let me tell you. It didn’t just come easy to name my business, I thought about it for a very long time. I though about using my daughters name, since she is the most meaningful thing in my life, but again no jingle to it. I also considered something to market myself to “target” clients, like “Eensy Weensy photography”, but I wasn’t in love with that either (even though that is my daughters favorite song).

After much consideration of what I wanted my brand to be, something refreshing and airy. When you look at my pictures, I wanted them to feel organic and like you were taking a big breath of fresh air. One day I was working on putting my business together and there it was sweating on my desk staring me straight in the face, my glass of lemon water. My favorite color is yellow, and I can usually be seen with a lemon in my water. Lemon water was exactly that freshness I wanted my clients to feel when saying or hearing my business name. I wanted to stand out and have a memorable name, while also branding my business with a “fresh” and “organic” feel to it. Something a little fun, and out of the ordinary.

Lemon Water Photography was born! I feel like I had an easier time naming my child then my business. What have you had to name that you couldn’t decide on? Did you ask others what they thought or just go with it? Did you regret it in the long run, or still going strong? I want to hear how you came to a name or a big decision that was going to influence people, comment below!
